Business Studies
Vision
Business Studies at SMSJ aims to prepare students to work within a dynamic business environment. Students cover a broad range of topics that provide our learners with the knowledge and understanding of decision-making of businesses in the national and global economy that they live in. We study how entrepreneurs will turn ideas into profitable businesses, as well as learning how companies operate and make important decisions on a local, national and international level.
Above all, our young people are encouraged to become enterprising and think creatively and commercially in order to solve problems and to explore what it takes to start-up and build a successful business in the world today and as it evolves.
Our students are academically educated to a high standard and we also pride ourselves in the way in which our pupils can apply their cognitive learning within the classroom to life outside of the classroom. Students are reminded to reflect on the ethical implications of decision-making and decisions that are made in Business. Through their learning, they are shaped in a way which enables them to deal with the world and those around them with empathy, sympathy and respect.
KS4
Students focus on big questions throughout their learning journeys (start to end) to develop a better understanding of Business. These can be found within our learning journeys. These learning journeys are being developed by the department on an ongoing basis to ensure that they highlight core areas within the curriculum and outside of the confines of the curriculum. See our roadmaps for more information.
Students finish their studies with a good understanding of the how businesses operate on a day-to-day basis and how this might affect their chances of survival and success if they decide to start-up and run a business. They will have a greater awareness of how the businesses that they might later work in operate and the roles that they might play within these businesses.
